doing salat/sacralizing space
by Samuel Tettner

Members of the Naqshbandi Haqqani Sufi order often "stamp the earth with the name of God" (Werbner, 1996), meaning they sacralize, through the performance of salat (prayer), otherwise secular spaces. In this case, the space is a half-empty parking lot on highway E-5 from Sevilla to Madrid. These images were taken by Samuel Tettner in 2018 as part of an ethnographic accompaniment of Spanish Sufi murids (In Arabic, ‘one who seeks’, initiates into the Sufi path) following the sheikh, or master, in his second visit to Spain from his habitual home in Northern Cyprus.
