Xenia, often translated as ‘guest-friendship’, is an ancient Greek word for a ritualised and heritable relationship with strangers, which establishes a reciprocal duty of protection and respect, or even a spiritual kinship between hosts and guests. In the Homeric epics, it appears as divine law.

Since September 2020, the Xenia Series offers open-access seminars on travel, tourism, pilgrimage, home, migration and belonging. Originally started as a platform to facilitate anthropological conversations, share research, theory and fieldwork, and overcome the obstacles of 'social isolation' during the Coronavirus pandemic, Xenia now features monthly lectures by international researchers, practitioners, artists and writers across disciplines. The series attracts audiences beyond academia, particularly those curious observers seeking to engage with anthropological ideas in a friendly setting. 

Events featuring world-renowned speakers are held every third Thursday of each month, currently online.  A Xenia conference is planned in 2021, featuring lectures, discussion groups and practical workshops.
